In 2002, my mother Rina Harrington, an Ovarian
Cancer survivor, started the
Space Coast Lunch Bunch. Based on the existing lunch bunch started in
Orlando, Rina felt that this was a positive experience that the Space Coast
should also partake in. Each month, OVCA survivors, patients, friends and
family get together for lunch, not to discuss the disease, but to celebrate
life.
Shortly after my mother began these lunches, I decided that a
website would be effective in sharing the information about each lunch with all
of the attendees...and so sclunchbunch.org was created. Slowly, the site began
to share more and more information beyond lunches as I tried to incorporate news
and other relevant OVCA information. The site lived on through 2005, when
for various reasons, mainly dealing with time and accessibility, we decided not
to renew the site. Shortly after this my mother received several emails
from past visitors of the site wondering where it had gone and that they had
used it as an information source. It was at this point that I realized we
could serve a greater purpose.
In late 2005 I decided to develop a site with its goal being to
connect the OVCA community in Central Florida. As tribute to the OVCA
ribbon, I decided to call this site The Teal Ribbon Network. This site
aims to serve the community by sharing information on OVCA news, events, and
important information that should be shared in the community. The site
looks to connect survivors, family, friends, and all those in the
medical field who work to battle this disease. The site is now the
homepage for the Ovarian Cancer Alliance of Florida's Space Coast chapter.
I have great hopes for this site and I welcome your ideas and your suggestions on how it can best serve the
community.
Thank you and please spread the word about the site!
